Candace Pauline Reiter Cupples, 89, Clarion, a volunteer educator for Penn State Cooperative Extension, died April 15 in Clarion.
Born Aug. 18, 1919, in Troutville, the daughter of John and Besse London Reiter. She was married to Raymond E. Cupples, Sr. July 19, 1939. They were married 69 years and he survives her.
She was a graduate of the Sykesville High School Class of 1936.
She lived in Philadelphia for 31 years before retiring and moving to Clarion in 1974.
She was active in church activities at both St. John's Lutheran Church in Folcroft, where she taugh Sunday school for 24 years and was active in the Lutheran Church Women and at Grace Lutheran Church in Clarion, where she quilted for Lutheran World Relief and created stuffed animals for children treated at the Clarion Hospital Emergency Room.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and playing pinochle. She was active in the community, teaching sewing, dress making and fine tailoring for the Penn State Cooperative Extension. She operated a safe house for mothers and children in need.
She was a member of homemakers groups and the Limestone Township Fire Department Auxiliary.
She is also survived by one son, Raymond Jr. of Clarion; one daughter, Mrs. Jan (Carol) Smed of Winter Springs, FL; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
