Samuel Joseph "José S." McPherson is thought to be of Scottish descent on his paternal side. His parents were Thomas Andrew MacPherson and Catherine Goldson. Records in St. Catherine Parish, Middlesex County, Jamaica show his father was a "Gentleman & Planter". His grandfather was John Andrew McPherson, husband of Susan Barchus, and a Lieutenant in the 2nd British West India Regiment. Prime source records show at least three generations of this McPherson family living in Spanish Town, St. Catherine Parish. Research for this family is ongoing.

Accounts of the family's history shared with me by Samuel Joseph's children & grandchildren state he was born in Jamaica and came to Panama with his parents. His gravestone gives his name as Jose S. McPherson. The date of birth on the gravestone differs somewhat from his baptismal record, so I have changed it here to the year of 1877.

Roman Catholic Registers

Chapel of St. Joseph
Volume II
Baptisms, May 8, 1875 to January 27,1878
Including baptisms in Clarendon, and in other parts of St. Catherine,
including the former districts of St. John and St. Thomas-in-the-Vale.

"MacPherson, Samuel Joseph, aged 2 months, baptized 24 June 1877 by George Huggins, child of Thomas Andrew MacPherson and Catherine Goldson. Sponsers James Norris and Antoinette Isaacs. p. 97"

José married Antonia Socarras, daughter of Manuel Socarras & wife Emilia Franco. They had these known children: Catalina (b. 10 Sept. 1906); Jose Nicasio (b. 14 Dec. 1909) Pascual Asman (b. 23 Oct. 1913); Hilda Emilia (b. June 1915); Lilia Maria (b. 06 Jan. 1917) & Angelica (b. 06 July 1923). There is no known later information for Catalina and I believe she must have died at an early age. They lived in the San Francisco District of Panama City. José worked as a mechanic and electrician.

Rest in peace.
