Guilford's parents were William & Harriet (Sharp) Bolander. He went with them to Clinton County, Ohio, then with his wife Belinda (Cahill) to Huntington County, Indiana and Grant County, Indiana. In the 1880s they came to Kansas, settling first in Labette County and then Neosho County. During the Civil War he served in Co. E, 47th Ohio Infantry, enlisting on Aug. 30, 1862. He was discharged on Dec. 8, 1862 due to disability.
