I do not know the origins of the nickname "Yankee John," but it was used by his granddaughter, Nancie Younkin, b. 1851 and recorded by her daughter, Carmie Forsythe in the 1930-40's. It was first reported in the Younkin Family News Bulletins printed in those years. Mark Miner as written extensively on this, and I'm in agreement with what he wrote.

The arrival of Ancestry.com with their specialty, circular databases, did nothing but muck up who was who, resulting in endless confusion on the internet.
