Mrs. Ruth Story Crocker, mother of Mrs. Clements of this place and Spencer Crocker of Berea met with an accident Saturday, February 20th that terminated with her death on Monday, February 22nd. She had been visiting in Amherst and was returning to Berea. When the train had stopped or nearly stopped at the Tatter Depot, Mrs. Crocker got off the car and in some way she fell under the wheels of the car which mangled her limbs so badly that one was amputated at the right knee and toes of the left foot. She did not recover much after the operation, and died apparently without much suffering. Her remains were brought to North Amherst for burial and the funeral service was held at the Congregational Church, Wednesday, Feb 25th Rev P.E. Harding officiating. She was born in Chautaugua County, New York. Jan 29, 1824, was married to Lorenzo Crocker Madison, Lake County, O [hio], July 13, 1843 and came to Amherst Sept 3, 1844. Four children were born to them, one dying in infancy. She was a member of the Baptist church uniting with the North Amherst Church by letter. She resided in North Amherst since the time she came here to her death excepting about two years.
