William Moffett Strain was the son of David Eldred Strain, Jr. and Martha Evelyn Moffett. He was 7 when his father died in Feb 1918. He married Harper Collinson Hardesty in Sep 1949.

June 1918: Little William Strain, son of Mrs. David E. Strain, while crossing Main street last Friday afternoon during the heavy rain storm, was run over by automobile and had his hip broken. He was taken to Jackson Hospital and getting along very well. Published in the Lexington Gazette dated 12 Jun 1918. He was aged 7 years and 9 months.

In 1927 he attended Lexington High School and was in The Crystall yearbook. He belonged to the Hi-Y Club (YMCA) and the Executive Committee (p 24 and 25).

1927 - 1930 Hargrave Military Academy. The private boarding school is located in Chatham, VA. The 1930 Oracle yearbook, p 30, 60, 62, 68, 101-102:  William M. Strain, Lexington, VA., "Bill," Private, 2nd Platton; Sergeant, 2nd Platoon; 2nd Lieutenant, Headquarters Detachment; Student Senate; S.O.S.; Old Dominion Club; Blue Ridge Club. There is no better way of presenting "Bill" to you than to let his record while here talk for him. "Bill" became a "keydet" in the fall of '27 and that year he was picked by a large majority as the most popular "rat." His every ready smile, sunny disposition, and general congenial attitude making him an all-round favorite. Last year when he won as even greater honor when he was taken into the S.O.S. the nearest approach to a fraternity in school and generally recognized "honor society of Hargrave." And in this, his last year, he was unanimously elected the Best Sport in the annual Who's Who contest. Add these to his military honors and you will see that he's a real fellow whom we are all proud to have associated with.  He appears in photos: with his Junior Detachment, Second Lieutenant W. M. Strain, Commander; Student Senate Member; S.O.S. Club first term Officer and member; Who's Who '30 as Best Sport plus his graduation photo.  

He also was in the 1931 College of William and Mary yearbook, the Colonial Echo.

In 1934, he resided at 6242 Carpenter Street in Philadelphia. In the same year, 1934, William M Strain and Florence Wilma Maxfield (26 Aug 1910-8 Jul 1993 FL), applied for a marriage license in Philadelphia Orphans' Court index, #637992.

16 Oct 1940: He registered for the World War II Draft in Allegheny Co., PA. William Moffett Strain aged 30, born in Lexington, VA on 30 Aug 1910. He resided at 419 Lexington Ave., in Aspinwall, Allegheny Co., PA with his wife, Mrs. Florence Maxfield Strain. He was 5'7", 130 lbs with brown hair and eyes and a ruddy complexion with a scar on his right cheek. Serial #1172, #859.

In 1944, he resided at 410 Lexington Ave, Aspinwall, in Pittsburgh, PA and was employed as a clerk. 1944 Pittsburgh, PA. City Directory

William M Strain applied for a (second) marriage license to Florence M Strain on 5 Jul 1945 in Allegheny Co., PA. The were married the same day in Pittsburgh by John S Reeves, J of Peace. Filed on 6th Jul #4264, in the Pittsburgh Orphans' Court. They divorced and she married Wm C Bulmer, licensed on 7 Jan 1947 in Allegheny Co., PA.

According to his future mother in law's funeral memorial book, Bill, his brother David and sister in law, Dottie, attended Cora's 1947 funeral. Bill sent an arrangement of "Orchids, Glads and white carnations."

William Moffett Strain's VA Certificate of Death says: he was the son of David E Strain and Martha Evelyn Moffett and husband of Harper H Strain. He was born 30 Aug 1910 in VA and died 31 May 1980 at home in Arlington, VA. The cause was immediate acute coronary insufficiency, due to coronary arterior_?_ heart disease for _?_ and essential hypertension. He was cremated at Metropolitan Crematory in Alexandria.
