Ira was born on July 19, 1923 in Flint, Michigan to Paul C. Bare (1891-1975) and Ferne E. (O’Brien) Bare (1895-1973), one of four children. He moved from Flint to Clio, Michigan as a young boy. Following high school, he served as a Marine Pilot with the Navy during WWII. Afterward, he went to college on the GI Bill and graduated from the old Flint Junior College. He then earned his law degree at the University of Michigan. He had a successful private law practice, located on the northeast corner of the only stop light in the City of Clio, for over 50 years.

Ira married Mavis O. (Ludvigsen) Bare, of Clio, MI, on June 7, 1947. They had two children, Paul I. Bare (1950) of Beulah, MI and Bonnie Bare (1951) of Clio, MI. Bonnie had three children, identical twins; Amanda Westfall Wares (1973) and Angela Westfall (1973), and Joshua Westfall (1978), all of Clio, MI.

He died on June 13, 2007 in Genesee County, Michigan. He was buried in the Inland Township Cemetery, Bendon, Benzie County, Michigan, with his wife, Mavis.
