Mavis was born on January 18, 1922 in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota to Louis John Ludvigsen (1887-1979) and Alma Pauline (Krog) Ludvigsen (1892-1987), one of five children. She was a first generation Norwegian-American. Her father immigrated to the United States from Norway through Ellis Island in 1905 and made his way to Minnesota. Her mother’s parents immigrated from Norway and settled in Minnesota, where her mother was born in 1892.

Mavis married Ira D. Bare, of Clio, MI, on June 7, 1947. They had two children, Paul I. Bare (1950) of Beulah, MI and Bonnie Bare (1951) of Clio, MI. Bonnie had three children, identical twins; Amanda Westfall Wares (1973) and Angela Westfall (1973), and Joshua Westfall (1978), all of Clio, MI.

She died on September 14, 2016 in Clio, Genesee County, Michigan. She was buried in the Inland Township Cemetery, Bendon, Benzie County, Michigan, with her husband, Ira.
