Claude Nelson Tankersley Jr., died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005. He was born in Lynchburg on Aug. 3, 1906, a son of Claude N. Tankersley Sr., and Allie Rockecharlie Tankersley.
He was a graduate of Lynchburg High School.
He served three years in the 80th Infantry Division in World War II, 18 months of that time in Europe, and earned the rank of sergeant. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, United Commercial Travelers, and American Legion Post 16.
He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Tankersley Baldock; and five brothers, Ralph, Garvin, Paxton, Russell and Roland. Twice married, his first wife was Kathryn Parnell and his second wife was Elizabeth Tweedy Huggins.
He is survived by a brother, Floyd of Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Eleanor Tankersley of Lynchburg, and Shirley Ricketts of Barnsville, Md.; three stepchildren, Nancy Kinsey of St. Augustine, Fla., Troy Huggins of Glen Ellen, Ill., and William Huggins of Raleigh, N.C., six step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces; and a good friend, Peggy Poole.
A memorial service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, with the Rev. Joseph T. Carson III, and the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow officiating. Inurnment will be in Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville.
