A native of Cherokee County, SC, he was a son of the late Roland and Millie (Wyatt) Downey.
He was a charter member of Westgate Baptist Church, American Legion Post 45, and was a past commissioner for North Spartanburg Fire Department where he helped build their first building and helped build their first fire truck. He was a WWI veteran of the United States Air Force.
In previous years he installed and maintained much of the equipment in many of the peach and apple packing sheds throughout the state. He retired from Michelin Tire Corporation and in the last several years built and restored many horse drawn carriages, including building the 1886 era horse drawn hearse which will transport his body to his final resting place.
He is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Catherine Mae Brady Downey, four daughters, Brenda Cannon of Inman, Kay Freeman and her husband John of Spartanburg, JoAnne Houghton and her husband Bob of Spartanburg, Cheryl Rogers of Inman; one son, Dale Downey and his wife Sharon of Inman; one brother, Thurmond Downey of Wellford; one sister, Maudie Johnson of Saluda, N.C.; and grandchildren, Kenny Cannon of Edgefield, Mari-Le Baker of Gaffney, Amy Pitts of Wellford, Marie Freeman of Spartanburg, Tara, Heather and Heidi Houghton, all of Spartanburg, Brian Rogers and Cody Downey of Inman; and eight great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Claudie and Defoy Downey.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Monday, June 2, 2003, at Westgate Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bill Bethea and the Rev. Ed Deese. Burial with military honors were in Fort Prince Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Seawright Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorials be made in his honor to The Organ Fund, Westgate Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC, 29301.
