Irma was always called "sister" by her siblings.
Irma married William Ezra "Bill" McCullough around 1940. They had one child, a son named Marvin Dalton McCullough, born in 1941. They were never able to have other children.
Irma was my aunt, and I have many happy childhood memories of days and nights spent with her and Uncle Bill. At one time, they lived in a house with a tin roof, and I would love to lay in bed and listen to the rain in that house. It was such a soothing sound.
Aunt Irma was a great cook (she learned that from her mother, my Granny). She canned vegetables and made Guava Jelly every year, and it was delicious. They always had a garden full of fresh vegetables.
Aunt Irma and Uncle Bill loved to go fishing, and they took me on many trips in Highlands County and the surrounding areas to fish. They taught me how, and they were very patient with me and always baited my hook until I was old enough that I didn't feel squeamish doing it myself.
They loved animals and always had chickens, ducks, sometimes quail or guineafowl. They even had a peacock or two. Their animals were pets to them, and none were there to be eaten.
They mainly had two different dog breeds as pets over the years. At one time, they had a Boston Terrier, but after that dog passed on, they always had Chihuahuas and Collies. A lot of their dogs were named Tammy or Tawny.
Aunt Irma also loved horses and owned many over the years. My sister and I always loved being at her house because we loved horses and animals, so it was like being on a farm for us!
They loved to go for drives on the weekends, and we were lucky enough to be invited along on many of those trips. They would choose some destination within 3 or 4 hours of Avon Park, and we'd drive to that place so they could look at plants, trees, animals or something else they were interested in buying. It was always a fun adventure for me.
The summer I turned 11 years old, they took me on a train trip with them up to Ohio to visit their son and his wife and their first grandchild. (The second grandchild was on the way.) That was the first extended train trip I had been on, and the longest time I'd been away from my parents.
I loved my Aunt Irma, and miss her very much.
