She was born as Janna Laansma in the town of Makkum, on the western coast of the Dutch northern province Friesland, daughter of Ida Kuiper and the late Jan Laansma, who died on Sept. 13, 1873. The later is also the reason that she was named Janna, the female form of the Dutch given name Jan, as a tribute to her deceased father.
