Funeral for retired Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph "Joe" A. Bacon Jr., 80, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lawton Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles King, pastor, officiating.
Sgt. Bacon died Sunday, April 19, 2009, in Lawton.
Interment will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.
He was born March 13, 1929, in Plains, Ga., to Joseph A. and Elizabeth Pennington Bacon, Sr. He grew up in Plains, Ga., where he attended local schools and graduated from Plains High School in 1947. He married Thelma Fox on Dec. 17, 1951, in Plains, Ga. He joined the Army and served two tours in Vietnam. He received the Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), National Defense Service Medal (1st OLC), Bronze Star Medal (3d OLC), Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3d OLC), Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal, Vietnam Unit Citation Republic of Vietnam Civil Act, Overseas Service Bars (4), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Army Occupation Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal with V Device (20LC). He was a member of Honorable Order of Saint Barbara, a military honor society for field artillery. After 30 years of service, he retired June 1, 1984, in Fort Lewis, Wash., with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He and his wife moved to Lawton where he began work with civil service at Fort Sill. He was a member of Lawton Height United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School. He was also a member of discipleship team, served on finance committee, served as Lay Leader and drove the bus. He was also past president with of North West Kiwanis Club, South Central District Square Dance Association and Sill-O-Ette Square Dance Club. He volunteered with the Salvation Army as a bell ringer and also volunteered with the Easter Pageant.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; four sons and three daughters-in-law: Tim and Mona Bacon, San Antonio, Texas; Michael and Tinh Bacon, Champaign, Ill.; Don Bacon, Liberty, Mo. and Clay and Gayle Baco, Salt Lake City, Utah; a brother and sister-in-law: Bobby and Martha Bacon, Plains, Ga.; four sisters: Kathryn Mauldin, Seneca, S.C.; Sarah Paradise, Americus, Ga.; Nelle Mallard, Sarasota, Fla.; and Marie Bacon, Marietta, Ga.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gene Bacon.
