PFC US ARMY
WORLD WAR I

Born in Rugby (unincorporated area), Mouth of Wilson, Grayson County, VA, Robert first joined the Army on December 16, 1909, and then served in Battery D, 4th Field Artillery, at Ft. D. A. Russell, Laramie County (present day Cheyenne), WY, until discharged on May 9, 1912.
Refs:
-1910 U.S. Census, Ft. D. A. Russell, Laramie County, Wyoming, dtd 7 June 1910.
- U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, United States Army, 1798-1914.

According to oral family history, after apparent additional WW-I military service stateside, Robert "went out west to work in the oil fields," and never returned to his Virginia home. Various later Draft and Census documents support his later living in various places in Texas (including Amarillo and Ft. Worth) and later in various places in California; in each case areas closely associated with the petroleum industry. 1942 Draft Registration and Amarillo City Directory indicate that at that time he was married to a "Stella," (last name unknown), and this name was confirmed by the Alameda-area funeral home which handled his 1965 burial at Golden Gate Nat'l Cemetery.
