Enlisted as a Private on 2 December 1861 in Company I, 46th Infantry Regiment Indiana at Lagro, Wabash County, Indiana. Discharged from Company I, 46th Infantry Regiment Indiana on 28 May 1862.

James Kerr was a store owner and lock operator at what is known as the "Jim Kerr Lock" in Lagro. He fell to his death in 1885 while attempting to cross the lock. He was survived by one daughter and two sons. Preceding him in death were two wives and one daughter.
