World War II veteran, 86 Joseph J. "Pepik" Chalupsky, 86, of Warrenton, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 in Warrenton.

Mr. Chalupsky was born July 23, 1917 in Comstock, Neb., to Jake and Antonia Polak Chalupsky. He was raised in Comstock and graduated from high school there. He then moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., and worked in a lumber yard for five years.

On June 23, 1941, he married Catherine Carroll in Lander, Wyo. She died July 24, 2000.

Mr. Chalupsky served with the U.S. Army's 343rd Artillery Battalion. After his discharge, he moved to Superior, Neb., and began working for the Bureau of Reclamation. He retired from the Bureau's Bismarck, N.D., location in 1973 and moved to Portland. He came to Warrenton in April 1996.

His hobbies included fishing, carving diamond willow canes and collecting rocks, arrowheads and Indian artifacts. He was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Portland and St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Astoria.

Mr. Chalupsky is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and John McComb of Portland and Rosemary and John Samp of Astoria; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Chalupsky and Diana Rasmussen of Phoenix and Gerald and Patricia Chalupsky of College Station, Texas; a brother, William Chalupsky of Burwell, Neb.; two sisters, Eva Wells of Comstock and Norma Panowicz of Portland; and nine grandchildren. A brother, Art Chalupsky, and a sister, Lillian Ruzicka, died earlier.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1465 Grand Ave.

Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
