Skolfield Ship Yard - Capt. Thomas spent several years at the yard, learning the art of the fine points of shipbuilding ; later on as we know, he became an apprentice on one of the Skolfield ships. In 1932 he was a seaman on the "Bath ship Atlantic", bound for New Orleans to Liverpool, where Thomas deserted, back to Harpswell. After his retirement he built his own ship; this ended in failure, as a violent squall overturned the ship -(or Bark) before it was launched - all was lost.
This may be the tale of the unfinished ship." Thomas bought land on Parkers Island, commonly called Ragged Arse, in Oct. 1833. There he built a home, farmed, and engaged in fishing. He was known locally as Ragged Island Tom. In 1850 he built, the fishing scooner Patriot, of which he and his son William were masters. In 1857 he sold his Island property and settled in Cundys Harbor on Great Island, Harpswell
