Half Paralyzed, Sergeant Fought to End
DETAILS OF HEROIC ATTU ACTION TOLD

Details of action on Attu Island nearly two years ago in which Sergeant Wesley K. Sellers of the infantry made the supreme sacrifice were received here recently by his widow, Mrs. Jean Sellers, cashier at Eisenhood's restaurant.

Three medals, the Purple Heart and both the Silver Star and the Bronze Star, have been posthumously awarded and are now among the few treasured items Mrs. Sellers keeps to present to her son, 14-months-old Kenneth Wesley, when he reaches the age to wonder "what- happened to Daddy" -- his daddy who gave his life months before Kenneth was born helping make this world a safer and happier place for all little folks.

Accompanying the Bronze Star Medal was a letter from Major General J. A. Ulio, adjutant general, describing the action in which Set. Sellers was shot through the head and killed.

The action took place May 29, 1943, on Attu.

"At the time of a Japanese counterattack," Gen. Ulio wrote, "Sergeant Sellers directed accurate fire upon the enemy for several minutes when he was wounded in the leg. Although unable to move, he still continued to fire until his ammunition was exhausted. While waiting for more ammunition, Sergeant Sellers was shot through the head and killed.

"His courage in the face of enemy fire was instrumental in repelling the Japanese attack before it had penetrated to further rear areas and contributed to the annihilation of the enemy."

Mrs. Sellers resides at 511 Earl street.
