Elizabeth Rogers was born on April 15, 1658 in New London, New London, Connecticut and died on June 10, 1716 on Orient Island, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. She was the daughter of James Rogers, Sr. (1615-1687) and Elizabeth Rowland (1619-1709).

James Rogers was born in 1615 in Stratford on Avon in Warwickshire, England and sailed for the American Colonies on April 15, 1635. He arrived at Massachusetts Bay in Massachusetts in about late May or early June of 1635. He married Elizabeth Rowland on March 2, 1640 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Elizabeth was born in 1619 in England but at this time I don't know when she arrived in the Colonies.

Their daughter Elizabeth's siblings were:

Samuel (1640-1713), Joseph (1646-1697), John (1648-unk), Bathsheba (1650-1711), James Jr. [Capt] (1652-1714), and Jonathan (1656-1697)

Her birth information came from a Millennium File, Family Data Collection (of Births), Family Data Collection-Individual Records, American Genealogical-Biographical Index, and U.S. New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Elizabeth's (or Elisabeth as on her headstone) death information came from a Millennium File, U.S. New England Marriages Prior to 1700 and her headstone.

Elizabeth's parents had lived in Milford in New Haven County, Connecticut and were there in 1652. Her father was said to have "had dealings" in New London (in Connecticut) and had a plantation there in 1656 [per History of New London, Connecticut].

On February 9, 1681, Elizabeth married Samuel Beebe, Jr. (1662-1742) in New London, New London, Connecticut [per the Barbour Collection and page 202 of the book "History of New London, CT"]. This book also states that, "the daughters of James Rogers were of great character and indicated Elizabeth's marriage to Samuel Beebe.

Elizabeth and Samuel had the following children (some birth years are circa):

Elizabeth (1684-unk), Mary (1686-unk), Bathsheba (1688-1764), Rebeckah (1689-unk), Patience* (1691-unk), Hopestill* (1691-unk), Hannah (1695-1729), Samuel III (1697-1763) and James (1701-unk)

*Patience an Hopestill were twins

Elizabeth died on June 10, 1716 on Orient Island, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York and was buried in the Browns Hill burying Ground on Orient Island. Several of Elizabeth's daughters are also buried in this cemetery including Hannah and Bathsheba.

Elizabeth's husband Samuel Beebe, Jr. was born in 1662 in New London, New London, Connecticut and died in 1742 on Plum Island in Suffolk County, New York. Apparently, Samuel was considered a reclusive and stayed primarily on Plum Island.

From various websites and wills it was stated that Samuel was buried on Plum Island although the exact location of his burial on the island is unknown. The island is now in the possession of the U.S. Government who has restricted access to the island as they conduct biological research on the island for diseases in various animals. His father Samuel Beebe, Sr. was also buried on the island.

About 10 years ago I contacted the administrators on Plum Island to ask if they knew of any burials. They told me that there was only one grave that was still visible and it was not for any of the Beebe's but for an American Revolutionary War Colonel named Thomas Gardner who was buried there in 1786. The grave is described as a deep pit and I believe it is marked.

Samuel, Sr. acquired about 1/3 of Plum Island in about 1700 (per Southold Town Records appendix, page 539). He purchased it from the families of the Whyllys and/or Dudley's. Samuel, Sr. was called "King Beebe" because he apparently loved to stay on the island and would sit on a large stone at one end of the island. Samuel, who was my 9th great grandfather, was born in 1633 in Broughton, Northamptonshire, England and came to the American Colonies in 1649 with one of his brothers, John, to prepare a place for the remainder of their family to come the following year, which they did in May 1650. Samuel, Sr. was a twin with his brother Thomas.

Inscription:

Another findagrave member sent me the inscription which I had on my ancestry tree but I wanted to make sure and include it on Elizabeth's page. From p.33 of “The Famous Beebe Brothers” and as read on her headstone (note that there is some question on a few of the words because comparing the transcription given to me to the headstone, some of the words appear different. I tried to list the actual spelling from the headstone):

Here Lyes Elisabeth, once Samuel Beebees wife
Who once was made a living soul buts now Deprived of life,
Yet firmly did belive that at her Lord’s return,
Shee should be made a living soul in her [his?] own shape and form,
Lived four and thirty years a Wife
Was aged fifty seven
Has now layd down her mortal life in hopes to live in Heaven.
