A memorial service will be held today, April 27, for Robert Emerson Cornwell of Shoshone, Idaho, and formerly of Cottage Grove. Cornwell died April 20 of complications of hip surgery. He was 82.
He was born June 5, 1922, in Marcola, to L.G. and Opal Cornwell. He married Mary Caccamo on Dec. 4, 1944, in Norfolk, Va.
He served in the Navy during World War II. He later worked as a supervisor for logging operations in the Northwest. He lived in Cottage Grove for many years and had lived in Shoshone for a year. He enjoyed hunting, salmon fishing, skiing, gardening and summers at the Oregon Coast with his family. He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Cottage Grove.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary of Ketchum, Idaho, and James of Hailey, Idaho; and a daughter, Deborah Cornwell, also of Ketchum. A son, Robert Jr., died previously.
Today's service will be held at 2:30 p.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church in Shoshone, Idaho. Wood River Chapel of Hailey, Idaho, is in charge of arrangements.
Note: His obit has named his stepmother, Opal, as his mother. His father and Opal didn't marry until 1939. His mother is Hattie May Smith.
