Byron was born July 3, 1983, in Eugene to Melodee and Jerry Soczek.
He graduated from International High School at Sheldon High School before spending two years in the U.S. Navy at Whidbey Island, Wash.
He worked in the Navy as an aircraft frame technician and received the Navy Achievement Award.
He also was a member of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
His family says he had the heart of a warrior, the soul of a poet and lived life full-throttle.
Survivors include his parents; his sister, Heather Soczek of Seattle; and grandparents, Ralph Sweet of Coos Bay and Mabel Soczek of Oregon City.
Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene was in charge of arrangements.
