Elmer J. Beto, 69, died Monday at St. Cloud VA Medical Center.


Elmer Beto was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Cushing to Frank and Lotina (Nelson) Beto. He married Rachel E. Taylor May 13, 1950, in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Randall, and had been employed by Minnesota State Highway Department, Brainerd District, until 1952 when he became assistant engineer for Morrison County Highway Department. He retired in 1984. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and recipient of the American Theater Service Medal and Bronze Arrowhead, European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Service Medals. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Public Employee Retirement Association and life member of Little Falls VFW Post 1112 and American Legion Post 46.


Survivors include his wife; sons and daughter, Douglas A. and Duane E., Little Falls; Leila, Minneapolis; brothers and sisters, Chester, Minnetonka; Frank, Cushing; Mrs. Herbert (Ruth) Wurdelman, Green Valley, Ariz.; Mrs. Clarence (Elsie) Bost, Princeton; Mrs. Vernie Taylor, Detroit Lakes; Mrs. Gene (Tina) Packer, McGregor; Helen, St. Cloud; Myrtle Hewitt, North Carolina; and four grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sisters and a brother, Leslie. Pallbearers will be Donald Newman, Richard Moran, Scott Palm, Leroy Pusc, Elmer Schommer and Mike Gohl.


The Rev. Kirk Griebel will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, with military rites provided by Little Falls American Legion Post 46 and Little Falls VFW Post 1112. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Shelley Funeral Chapel and at the church one hour before services. Little Falls American Legion will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel in Little Falls.
