Jim was born 22 July 1887 near Hay Springs, Sheridan County, Nebraska, the son of William Henry Bomar and Mary Francis (Swanger) Bomar. Like many of their children, Jim had multiple names: James Walter Samuel "Jim" Bomar.

He married Neva Emily Rucker in 1909 in Rushville, Sheridan Co., Nebraska. They had four children: Neva Marie, Hazel, Frances, and Walter Bomar. Jim and Neva divorced in 1919 in Broadwater County, Montana.

Jim Bomar married Mary Gladys (Loch) Wilson in 1922 in Newcastle, Weston Co., Wyoming. They (informally) adopted and raised two girls: Joyce Valjean Shubert, raising her as Valjean Bomar. They then raised her daughter, Patricia Ann "Patty" Chapman as Patricia Ann "Patty" Bomar. (Patricia's Find-A-Grace memorial #70500750).

Jim was a rancher, farmer, and logger.

Jim Bomar died on 4 April 1972 in Rushville, Sheridan Co., Nebraska. He is buried in the Hay Springs Cemetery, Hay Springs, Sheridan Co., Nebraska next to his second wife, Mary.
