Theologican. He was born in Braunschweig as sixth child of Polycarp Leyser and Elisabeth Cranach. In 1602, only ten years old he entered the university of Wittenberg where he received magister degree of the liberal arts eight years later and then began his studies of theology. In the following years he studied at different universities, among them those in Gießen, Tübingen, Straßburg and Basel. After 1619 he traveled through northern Germany, Holland, England and France and took his doctor's degree in 1621 at the University of Jena. He then went as preacher and superintendent to Torgau. In 1627 he became professor in Wittenberg and was the university rektor four times between 1630 and 1648. Wilhelm was married twice; his first wife Regina Tetzel bore him six children including Regina, who married a grandson of Luther, Wilhelm II and Katharina Elisabeth. His second wife Catharina Bose bore him nine children.
