LTC(Retired) James A. (Jim) Norton, 79, Leavenworth, KS passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at his home.

Jim was born March 11, 1929 in Farwell, TX the son of Charles B. and Opha L. (Bean) Norton. On December 4, 1982 in Leavenworth, KS Jim married Genevieve R. Raymond, she survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Catherine M. Dennison and step sons-Tommy A. Thompson, Dwight G. Raymond, and Kirk C. Raymond. Nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was a devoted and caring grandfather.

Jim graduated from Tulsa, OK Central High School and received a Bachelor's of General Education from the University of Omaha and attended the Command and General Staff College. He retired from active federal service on March 31, 1980 after serving eleven years as enlisted and advanced to the highest enlisted grade. After a direct commission in 1957 he served as a commissioned officer for 23 years, advancing to Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army.

His decorations included the Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritious Service
Medal (two awards), Bronze Star (two awards), Army Commendation Medal (four awards) and Good Conduct Medal (three awards). He received service medals for WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Retired Officers Assoc., D.A.V., 1st Cavalry Division Assoc., 9th Inf. Assoc., Train Collectors Assoc., Toy Train Operators, Circus Model Builders, and Circus Fans of America.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Sunday February 8, 2009 at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held 10 am Monday Feb. 9, 2009 at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Burial with military honors will be held in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be given to Odyssey Hospice, 800 E 101st Terr. Suite 150, Kansas City, MO 64131.
