Charleen Ann Abbey, née Hendrickson, of Anchorage, died April 23, 2009, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Family and friends will celebrate her life by telling stories and playing cribbage from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post 1, 840 W. Fireweed Lane. She was born at home in Lyman, Wash., Dec. 19, 1932. She was raised in Seattle and came to Alaska to ski in 1972 while working in public relations for Western Airlines. She fell in love with Alaska and in February 1975, moved to Anchorage permanently. She worked as the information officer in the Anchorage office of Gov. Jay Hammond and Gov. Bill Sheffield from 1975 to 1987. She was then editor of the Alaska Directory of Attorneys until her retirement in 1997. Charleen is survived by her daughter, Kathleen, and son-in-law Mark Scribner of Pismo Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Ryan and Lauren Drew of San Diego, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Joan Hendrickson of Phelps, Wis.; many nieces and nephews; and many longtime dear friends and cribbage buddies. She was preceded in death by her mother, Vera Richardson; and father, Russell Hendrickson.
