"W. Harbeck Dies Thursday At Age 88"
William Harbeck, 88, of 221 Field street, died Thursday at a Wausau hospital. He worked for many years with the Chicago Northwestern railroad as a brakeman and later as a conductor.
A son of the late Henry and Ida Harbeck, he was born June 5, 1889, in Kalow, Iowa. In 1918, he married Lillian Spencer who preceded him in death in 1951.
Mr. Harbeck served in the U.S. Army from July 22, 1918 until Sept. 20, 1919. He worked as a railroad brakeman with the Army Engineering corps while in Tours and Le Mans, France.
From 1910-1912, he worked with the bridge and building crew of the Illinois Central railroad in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. In 1913, he moved to Ashland and began a 46-year career working for the Chicago and Northwestern railroad. In 1915, he moved to Antigo and was employed by the railroad until retiring June 19, 1959.
Mr. Harbeck was a member of the United Methodist church, the Brotherhood of Railroad trainmen, Lodge 151, for 64 years, and the V.F.W. Post No. 2653.
Surviving are a son, George, Green Bay; a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Ethel) Pizl, Antigo; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, and a sister.
Services are Monday at 10 a.m. at the McCandless-Zobel and Bradley funeral home with the Rev. Wendell Stoneburner officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery.
Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The V.F.W. post No. 2653 will stand honor guard from 7 to 8 p.m.∼
