United States Army General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1913, was commissioned an officer in the Infantry and served as an instructor in the Army's machine gun school during World War I. At the start of World War II, he was promoted Brigadier General Chief of Staff to supervise the training of new soldiers. In 1942, as Major General, he was sent to the Pacific to organize the reinforcement and defense of New Caledonia. In December 1942, he was promoted Lieutenant General in command of the XIV Corps, in charge of the entire offensive on Guadalcanal. He took command of the entire US 7th Army in Europe, in early 1944, leading his corps through France and into Germany until the end of the war. Promoted Full General, he returned to the United States to take command of the 4th Army in August 1945, but was soon hospitalized with lung problems and died of pneumonia.
