C. John Powell
Services for Norman resident C. John Powell, 73, are scheduled for 11 a.m., Thursday
at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Phil Fenn, the Rev. John
Lee Powell, the Rev. Paul Powell, the Rev. James Powell and the Rev. David Powell
officiating. Private inurnment services will be held at a later date. Services are under
the direction of Mayes Funeral Directors.
Mr. Powell died Monday, Feb. 18, at Norman Regional Hospital, after an extended illness.
The son of John Wesley and Mary Ida Worley Powell, he was born Oct. 11, 1917, at
Wayland, Texas, where he resided during his youth. He graduated from Parks High School
in 1936, later attending Central College at Fayetteville, Mo., Moberly Junior College in
Moberly, Mo.,and Northeastern Missouri State Teachers College.
An aviator, Mr. Powell served in the United States Navy from 1942-46. Mr. Powell and
Jean Gutekunst were united in marriage on Oct. 13, 1946, at Moberly, Mo. After moving
to Norman in 1947, he attended the school of architecture at the University of Oklahoma.
After completion of his studies at O.U., Mr. Powell founded the C. John Powell Designer/
Builder/Realtor business in Norman during 1950. As a designer/builder, Mr. Powell was
responsible for hundreds of homes in the Norman area.
Serving as president of Norman Home Builders in 1954 and of the Norman Board of
Realtors in 1964, Mr. Powell was active in the Norman Chamber of Commerce and
Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of American Legion and McFarland Memorial
United Methodist Church, were he served as a teacher and a member of Two-in-One-Class,
and also as a member of the administrative board.
Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Jean of the home; two sons, Scott of Dallas, Texas,
and Commander John R. Powell of Virginia Beach, Va.; three brothers, Julius of Winfield.
Kan., Oscar of Healdton and J.W. of Waco, Texas; and three grandsons, John ,Daniel and
David Powell. He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and a grandson.
Edward, John W., John H., Jay and Dwayne Powell, William O. Felkner, Dr. Phil Haddock,
Fred Sinnett, Carlisle Waugh, Fred Bowden and Johnathan Snell will serve as bearers.
Members of the Two-In-One Class will serve as honorary bearers.
Friends may call at Mayes until 9 a.m. Thursday. Family visitation will be at the funeral
home from 7-9 p.m. tonight and at the church from 10-11 a.m. Thursday. The family has
suggested McFarlin United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 2190, Norman,
73070, as appropriate for memorial contributions.
