Mr. Hubert Hammond - Age 89, a native of Reform, Alabama and a resident of Bay Minette, Alabama, died Monday, October 16, 2006 at his residence. He was a retired business manager for Faulkner State Community College where he worked for 41 years. Mr. Hammond was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on various committees. Hubert was a Navy medic attached to the Marines who served on Iwo Jima in the Pacific Theater in World War II. He received the Bronze Star for heroic service. A true philanthropist who cherished education, Hubert endowed scholarship funds at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and at Faulkner State Community College in Bay Minette. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia "Jenny" (Connell) Hammond, Bay Minette, AL; 2 grandchildren, Jeffrey Coats, Bowling Green, Ohio and Kelley Coats Newell, Hope Hull, AL; 3 brothers, Wyatt (Frances) Hammond, Marion, AL, John "Hap" (Hilton) Hammond, Palmetto, AL and Jeremiah (Myra) Hammond, Mobile, AL; nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his son, Vince Hammond. The funeral service will be held Friday, October 20, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Bruce Fitzgerald and Rev. Frank Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Bay Minette Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, October 20, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. until the 2:30 p.m. service at the First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 338, Bay Minette, AL 36507. Active pallbearers will be David Hammond, Craig Helms, Robert Ard, J.L. Newsome, Jerry Hammond, Larry Johnson, George Kirchharr and Bob Wills. Honorary pallbearers will be the men's Bible class of the First United Methodist Church. Funeral arrangements by NORRIS FUNERAL HOME, 402 E. 2nd St., Bay Minette, AL 36507.
