William Walter Gardner, 71, of Fisherville, died Tuesday at Humana Hospital-Audubon. He was a retired building contractor and an Army vetern of World War II. Survivors: his wife, the former Mable Hedgepeth, a daughter, Janet Brewer; five sons, James W., Lamont L., Kenneth L., Robert E., and William E. Gardner; four sisters, Elizabeth Fowler of Elizabethtown, Gladys Shacklett, Virginia Garr, and Eleanor Harris; two brothers, Charles Elvin and Robert Eugene Gardner; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral 1 p.m. Friday, McAfee Funeral Home, 4501 Bardstown Road, with burial Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Injured (shot) in Line of duty, France. Admitted hospital October 1944, released from hospital March 1945. Discared 3-19-1945. He received a Purple Heart. The Battle of the Bulge was a major German offensive campaign launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Belgium, France, and Luxenburg.
