Jim was born July 2, 1930, in Bismarck, to John and Elizabeth (Hanks) Craven. He was raised and educated in Telfer township on the family farm, where he completed the eight grade. He then worked on nearby farms as a farm hand while competing in local rodeo circuits for a few years before moving to Perryton, Texas where he worked as a harvester and butcher. While in Texas Jim met his first wife, with whom he had three sons before they were divorced. In 1965, Jim met Arleen Kruckenberg and married her in 1966 and moved to Worland, Wyo., where they had their son, Monte.
Jim loved animals and always surrounded himself with them where ever he was, never going far without at least his dogs. His life was the farm animals he looked after and the excitement of the rodeo.
He is survived by his wife, Arleen: two sons, Monte Craven, Marshal Islands and James Craven, Big Piney, Wyo; Two brothers, John Craven, Arrigon, Ore., and Donavon Craven, Umarilla, Ore.; four sisters, Lillian Craven, Bismarck, Lucile (Russell) Heaton, McKenzie, Catherine (Melvin) Hanson, Bismarck and Elizabeth (Lyle) Ennen, Menoken; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bernard and Gerald: and two brothers-in-law.(Bismarck Funeral Home)
