For several months Mrs. Schwarz had been in declining health. There was a family observance of her 93rd birthday March 13.
A younger sister of Mrs. Schwarz, Mrs. Emma Ziems, 86, of Bertrand, died three days before the Lexington woman, on March 22. Funeral services and committal at Bertrand were the same day that Mrs. Schwarz was taken by death.
"Granny" Schwarz, as she had been called by family and friends for years, was one of the few remaining early-day settlers of this area. It was in 1890 that she and her husband came to the Smithfield locality from Otoe county. They lived in a sod house on the prairie for several years before moving into a residence they built on their farm.
Minnie Karsten, daughter of Joachim and Wilhelmina Kempe Karsten, was born March 13, 1872, in Otoe county. She married Jacob Schwarz Dec. 28, 1888. Twelve children were born to this union. Mr. Schwarz died Oct. 28, 1935, and in 1938, Mrs. Schwarz came to Lexington to reside.
She is survived by one son, Frank Schwarz of Lexington; four daughters, Mrs. John (Elsie) Ropers of Oconto, Mrs Fred (Clara) Woehrle, Mrs. Harold (Rosa) Woodside, and Mrs. Norman (Lena) Phelps, all of Lexington; 37 grandchildren and 90 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, six sons and one daughter preceded her in death, as did six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the last of her family as four brothers and two sisters had preceded her in death.
Reynolds-Love Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
