B.J. Carter was a son of John Jackson Carter and a grandson of William "Riley" Carter and Linnie Sapp Carter of Appling County, Georgia. In the 1945 Florida census he is listed with his father, John Jackson Carter and his mother Burnice. His brother, Herman is also listed in the same census. The obituary is as follows:
B.J. Carter, 72, of Avon Park died Aug. 16, 2008. Born in Wauchula, he had been a resident of Avon Park since 1937. He was the chief correctional officer at the Avon Park Correctional Institute for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He served in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lucy; son, Wesley H.; daughter, Deborah G. Colson; brother, Herman Riley Carter; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20 at First Baptist Church in Avon Park. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Jack White officiating. Interment will follow in Bougainvillea Cemetery in Avon Park.
Arrangements are being handled by Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home, Avon Park.
