"Lemuel Powers Leland was the youngest son of 'Elder' John and Sarah Devine Leland. He served in the War of 1812 (Note marker.) Lemuel never acheived the fame of his father. 'Frankly he was a dirt-poor farmer who faced uncounted obstacles and disasters, and somehow fought his way through them all without fanfare or reward. His greatest wealth probably figured to be his family.' Yet his life is noteworthy because, '..he typifies the pioneer spirit that transformed this country from an unfriendly wilderness into a civilized and free nation.'"

Lemuel and his children's families are chronicled in "A Leland Journey" by Dale Congdon.
