Classie Barton, 72, of W. Broad Street, Clinton, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at Fort Sanders Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Barton was retired from the food service department of Clinton City Schools and had worked at Clinton Elementary.

She was a longtime member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Clinton where she was president of the missionary board, a former vice president of the usher board and "mother of the church."

She was born in Rome, Ga., on May 22, 1925. She had been a resident of Clinton since 1941.

Mrs. Barton enjoyed cooking and spending time with her children and grandchildren, the family said. She was treasurer of the FCE Green McAdoo home demonstration club and enjoyed traveling with them. She also collected hats, the family said.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty McKinley of Clinton; three sons, Nevie Barton Jr., and his friend, Janet Roddy, Curley Barton and Lincoln Barton and his wife, Marcia, all of Clinton; and a brother, James Jones and his wife, Rose, of Detroit, Mich.

Mrs. Barton is also survived by seven grandchildren, Lona and Eddie Golden of Knoxville, Ramonda Barton of Cleveland, Ohio, and Ivoree Barton, Nevetta Barton, Michele Barton and Marcie Barton, all of Clinton; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Inez Johnson and her husband, Waddell, and May Jasper and her husband, Timothy, all of Clinton; several nieces and nephews, including a nephew she considered special, Ernest Scruggs of Clinton; three aunts, Allean Daniels of Springfield, Ohio, and Maudie Finley and Lucille Mayes, both of Rome, Ga.; and several other relatives.

Special friends of Mrs. Barton were Susie Mae Willis, Berline Ellis, Anna Mae Hale and Deacon Eddie Golden Sr.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Clinton with the Rev. William Caldwell and the Rev. O.W. Willis, Jr., officiating.

Burial will be at the church cemetery.
