Mary Spencer Parkman was born at Spencertown, Hudson, Columbia, New York.

Her father, Henry Dwight Parkman (born about 1795 - died after the 1880 census), was a jeweler and silversmith of some renown. No doubt the two index finger rings and the neck brooch in her picture portrait were gifts from her dad.

Henry D. Parkman served as an alderman for the town of Hudson, Columbia, New York, in 1833. Additionally, he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Hudson City Guards (a sort of police force first organized in 1820). Read about this (and more) in the book entitled "Historical Sketches of Hudson... " by Stephen B. Miller and published in 1862.

Mary Parkman's mother was Lydia Spencer (born about 1805 - died after the 1880 census). Lydia Spencer's father (Mary Parkman's maternal grandfather) was Judge Ambrose Spencer, Sr., (born 1765 - died 1848) of the fabled "Spencer" family for which Spencertown, Columbia County, New York, was named.

On February 11, 1852, she was married at Hudson, Columbia, New York, to Captain Henry Clay Bartlett (born 1830 - died at Freylach's farm's front porch from injuries sustained on Dug Gap Battlefield at Dalton, Georgia, on May 8, 1864). Captain Bartlett was the son of Gamaliel Bartlett (born in Massachusetts 1796 - died 1859 at Brooklyn, New York City), who was the first postmaster of Stanhope, Sussex, New Jersey.

Sadly, less than two years after the wedding, she fell ill while with her husband either in Brooklyn, New York City, or Centerville, Livingston, Essex, (now Roseland) New Jersey. It is likely that she had tuberculosis or, as it was then known, "consumption".

Mary Spencer Parkman Bartlett returned to her parents' home at Hudson, Columbia, New York, where, despite attentive nursing, she died.

No children were born to this union.
