Anchorage resident Anthony James O'Malley, 21, died Oct. 26, 2003, at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore., after a seizure and subsequent cardiac arrest caused by an unintentional drug overdose. A Mass of Resurrection was held at Holy Family Cathedral. A reception and celebration of Mr. O'Malley's life followed at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art.

Born Aug. 12, 1982, in Portland at Emanuel Hospital while his father was a surgical resident there, he moved with his family to Anchorage in 1986. His family wrote: "Anthony grew up in East Anchorage. He attended Bartlett High School, King Career Center and the University of Alaska Anchorage. He had a passion for hard work and was a construction manager for Kaer Kraft Construction, where he was first employed when he was 15. "Anthony was blessed with a brilliant mind, strong will and a love of scientific and political debate. He was a keen observer with a deft wit and a charming sense of humor. He was deeply loyal and a mentor to his friends, co-workers and family. "He delighted in cooking Italian meals, cracking jokes, reading, giving gifts and getting his pickup truck thoroughly covered with mud. He was a snowboarder, a pen-and-ink artist and an admirer of the work of Adam Sandler, Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino and Michael Moore. Among his many dreams was a plan to start his own construction firm. "Anthony was fascinated by nature and animals. As a child he could stare into a tide pool or under a rock for hours. He spent many fine weekends fishing, target shooting and camping with friends. He also loved music, from punk rock to techno to rap, and his easy-going whistle will be missed. "Anthony liked to hang out with his family, friends, girlfriend and his brother. "Anthony was wonderful. He brought amazing zest and intensity to every moment of his life. We loved him so much. Losing him breaks our hearts." He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Virginia O'Malley and Fred and Lidia Selkregg.

He is survived by his father and mother, James O'Malley and Sheila Selkregg; stepmother, Elizabeth Belgard O'Malley; brother and sister, Joseph and Julia O'Malley; stepbrother, Patrick Stinson; long-time girlfriend, Roxy Pruett; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Donations may be sent to the Anthony O'Malley Youth Fund, Alaska Community Foundation, 880 H St., Anchorage 99501.
