Donald McPhail was the second of at least nine children born to Alexander M McPhail (1801-1884) and Jennet Drummond (born about 1814 in Scotland). Both parents remained in Scotland and are buried there. At least four of Donald's siblings also immigrated to America.

Donald came to America around 1856 and settled in Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin. There he met Mary Ella Fairchild whose family moved from New York to Fond du Lac county around 1850. They were married 16 Jan 1866 at Rosendale, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. Previous to their marriage, he had served with the US Navy and served in Indiana aboard the "Little Rebel"; he was discharged, in 1865, after only a year's service due to contracting malaria.

The couple, along with his wife's family, emigrated to Saline County, Kansas, and farmed. They had eight children: George, Laura, Charles, herbert, Edna, Daniel, Gertrude, and Elvin.

Donald's brothers John, Alexander, Duncan, and George also came to America and also settled near him; John died in McPherson, Alexander in Kansas City, Duncan in McPherson and George in Assaria.

Donald died at the Old Soldiers' Home in Fort Leavenworth. His widow died in 1914 and is buried in the Gypsum Hill Cemetery at Salina, Kansas.
