Leah C. Hess, 72, of 1435 Brittain St., Berwick, died Monday evening at 9:15 in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where she had been patient for one week. She was ill two weeks.Born in Lime Ridge on Jan. 28, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Frederick P. and Laura McCarty Gensel. Mrs. Hess was previously employed by Wise Foods and Consolidated Cigar Corp. both of Berwick. She lived in Berwick most of her life. She and her husband, Donald M. Hess, were married 28 years on Dec. 30. They had traveled extensively with a real estate appraisal firm over the past 15 years, returning to Berwick in 1985.
She was a former member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Berwick.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children: Kenneth and Alfred Houseknecht, both of Berwick; Mrs. James (Sandra) Bannor, Lake Ariel, Thomas Fetterman, Berwick; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Gensel, Danville and Kirbet Gensel, Berwick; two sisters, Mrs. Joel (Irma) Baker, Bloomsburg R.D.5; and Pauline Chamberlain of Berwick. Two sisters, Isabel Slusser and Frances Bennett, died previously. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from Mayo Funeral Home, Berwick, with Rev. Jerome W. Haupt, Calvary United Methodist Church, Berwick, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.
