James Mains was in Company C. 26th Illinois Vol. mustered in 31 August 1861 at Camp Butler, the 26th. went to Hannibal Missouri, to New Madrid Missouri, on March 3rd. were engaged at Farmington where five men were lost, 30 wounded, from there to Tennessee and Mississippi, were at the siege of Jackson Mississippi, where many men were killed and more wounded, Co. C. marched 6,931 miles, and fought 28 battles, including Madrid, Farmington Island, #10, Corinth, Holly Springs, Luka, Jackson Mississippi, Vicksburg, Mission Ridge, Rasaca-de-la-Palma, Kennesaw Mountain, and Many others, James was a Lt. and became Capt. after one Capt. was reported AWOL. Fort Hannibal has been restored as a tourist attraction, Camp Butler is in Springfield, Illinois, James was handsome and tall, with a very pleasant personality, His Mother Falby Mains Drake, never could get over the fact that that he went to War a Democrat and returned a Republican.
