Eugene L. Abernathey, 59, of Brandon, Iowa died Monday evening at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a sudden illness.

Gene was born on May 20, 1949, in Belle Plaine, Iowa the son of Kathryn E. Abernathey. He attended the Vinton Schools, Vinton, Iowa

was united in marriage to Deanna L. Rouse on July 20, 1968 in the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa.

The couple owned and operated the Abernathey Auto in Brandon, Iowa for twenty eight years.

He was a Brandon Volunteer Fireman for twenty nine years.

Gene enjoyed racing stock cars, truck pulling, and watching NASCAR racing. He loved antique gas engines, antique tractors, going to swap meets and auctions, and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Ross and Opal Abernathey, who raised Gene.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with Rev. Mary Schnepf officiating. Burial will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday at the Brandon Cemetery, Brandon, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Thursday and from 8 A.M. till services Friday at the funeral home.
