Hugh's father was John David McCorkle, son of Thomas M. and Louvicy Smith McCorkle. John Davis was born in Marengo County, Alabama, but moved to Richland Parish, Louisiana as a young man. There he met and married Eugenia McLemore and started his family. The family left Louisiana and moved to Texas sometime between 1890 and 1900. In the 1900 census, Eugenia is in Waco, Texas, a widow. It is not yet known when and where John David McCorkle died. To follow Hugh's ancestors go to the memorial for John David's father Thomas M. McCorkle #77221662.
Hugh McCorkle joined the Canadian military before WWI so that he could fight, and then when the US joined the war Hugh left Canada, changed his last name to that of his sister Sophronia Allen, and joined up in the US military to fight. He was known for the rest of his life as Hugh Lawson Allen.
