Gary L. Davis, 62, of Robinson died at 8:45 p.m. EST Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Vincennes, Ind.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Church of Christ, Robinson, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell and the Rev. Mont Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Palestine. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and two hours prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Honors will be presented by Illinois State Police Honor Guard and combined units of Robinson VFW Post 4549, Robinson American Legion Post 69, Flat Rock American Legion Post 132 and Amvets Post 33. Memorials may be made to VFW Post 4549 Transportation Fund, Crawford Memorial Hospital Foundation, Robinson, or Lawrence/Crawford Association for Exceptional Citizens.

Mr. Davis was born Jan. 9, 1947, in Robinson, the son of Harry Davis and Mary Robinson Davis.

He graduated from Robinson High School in 1965 and attended Eastern Illinois University, Charleston graduating in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in business and marketing. He served in the U.S. Army Security Agency as a wire traffic analyst. He served in Vietnam during the TET offensive and two years in West Germany in security. He served with Illinois State Police from January 1974 to January 1993 and retired as acting commander of Zone 12, Effingham.

He was a senior investigator of fraud for Erie Insurance Company since 2002. Mr. Davis was instrumental in founding Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force in 1989, and was a supervisor of that unit. He was an alderman for city of Robinson from 1987 to 1989.

Mr. Davis was mayor of Robinson from 1989 to 1993, and from 2005 to the present. He was elected mayor again in 2009. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 69, a life member of Robinson VFW Post 4549 and a member of Robinson Elks Lodge 1188. He also was a charter member of Highland Church of Christ. He married Janice McCrory Oct. 1, 1966 and she survives.

He also is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Darren and Carmen Davis of Robinson, and Perry and Andrea Davis of Effingham; daughter, Sara Davis of Robinson; grandchildren, Daniel Davis, Zachary Davis, Hannah Davis; and brother and sister-in-law, Gale Lynn and Kim Davis of Hutsonville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Kelli Anne Davis.
