"The Rev. John F. Heemstra, 67, retired pastor of Reformed churches in this city, Hudsonville, and Grand Rapids, passed away last Thursday at the home of a nephew, Benjamin Heemstra, at Santa Ana, Cal., where he had been visiting for the past few months. Rev. Heemstra had planned to spend the winter in California. Rev. Heemstra resigned last Dec. 1 after approximately 40 years spent in the ministry. Had he lived, he would have been awarded a doctor of divinity degree by Hope College at its commencement this coming June.

About a week ago, Rev. Heemstra suffered an apoplectic stroke, which was the cause of death. Rev. Heemstra's latest charge was the Hudsonville Reformed church. He was formerly pastor of the Fourth Reformed church in Holland. His wife died about a year ago.

Born in Orange City, Iowa, Nov, 16, 1870, he attended Northwestern Academy and was graduated from Hope College in 1895 and from New Burnswick Theological Seminary in 1898. Before he became principal of Northwestern Academy in Orange City, he was pastor at Springfield, S.D., Sioux Center, Iowa, and Newkirk, Iowa. From 1910 to 1914, Rev. Heemstra served the Seventh Reformed church in Grand Rapids. Then he was pastor at First Reformed church, Roseland, Chicago. He was editor of the Christian Cynosure for many years.

Other positions the deceased has held are board member of Christian Psychopathic hospital at Cutlerville, member of the board of the Netherlands Reformed Church in America, member of the board of superintendents of Western Seminary here, and member of the board of New Brunswick Theological Seminary. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Wolbrink Funeral home, Hudsonville.

Survivors are a son, Clarence, superintendent of schools at Fenton; a daughter, Mrs. John Hager of East Grand Rapids; a brother, Albert, of Orange City; two sisters, Mrs. H. Spinden of Doon, Iowa, and Mrs. M. Ver Burg of Orange City; and five grandchildren, Raymond Welling, and David, John and Daniel Floyd Hager, and Claire Irene Heemstra."
