Enlisted under the name William Calhoun, which he often went by, he served in Co. B, 54th Indiana Infantry, 2 Jun 1862 to 1 Sep 1862; 8th Indiana Battery Light Artillery 25 Mar 1864 to 13 Mar 1865; and 7th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery 13 Mar 1865 to 8 May 1865. He was also known as A.W. Calhoun. He was the son of Robert C.B. Calhoun and Eliza Goodman. In 1880 he married Rachel Carolina "Carrie" Hoffmann.
