Astor Relatives Insane
Jury Find Gabrielle and Peter de Nottbeck, Heirs to $2,000,000, Incompetent.
A brother and sister, who are related to the Astor's and who are heirs to an estate valued at about $2,000,000, were declared insane and incompetent yesterday by a Sheriff's jury at White Plains in charge of Commissioners Dr. Samuel B. Lyons, Addison J. Young, and John J. Brown.
The incompetents are Miss Gabrielle de Nottbeck and her brother, Peter de Nottbeck, children of Mrs. Cecelia L. de Nottbeck, niece of the first John Jacob Astor. She died at a sanitarium at Fishkill-on-the-Hudson on Aug. 26 last, where her son and daughter are also patients.
The mother, son, and daughter were all patients in the same sanitarium conducted by Dr. Kittridge. From evidence adduced by Lawyer Grenville L. Emmet, who represents the de Nottbeck estate, Gabrielle and Peter have been inmates of the Fishkill sanitarium for nearly twenty-seven years. Gabrielle is 55 years of age, and, according to the testimony of two doctors, she plays with toys like a child. Her brother, Peter, refuses to talk to anyone, and it is said he has not answered any questions for years. The evidence produced before the jury went to show that both brother and sister are suffering from dementia. Each is heir to property on Broadway, Fifth Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Grand Street, Washington and Greenwich Street, in Manhattan, in addition to a large number of bonds and mortgages. The only other heirs to the big estate are Miss Eugenia de Nottbeck of Geneva, Switzerland, and Miss Cecelia de Nottbeck, who lives in Dorsa, Vt.
