Louis Fryar enlisted at age 20 on Aug 14, 1861 to serve 3 years in Company A, 37th Illinois Infantry. He mustered into the unit as a PVT on Sep 18, 1861 at Chicago. He was later promoted to Corporal, and was listed on rolls also as Lewis Fryer or Freyer. CPL Fryar's unit fought initially in Missouri and Arkansas, participating in the campaign for Springfield, MO and the battles of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove, AR. The regiment then participated in the siege of Vicksburg, MS. It was in the actions at Atchafalaya and Sterling's Farm in LA and then went to Brownsville, TX to guard the Rio Grande. CPL Fryar reenlisted for 3 more years as a "veteran" at Brownsville and, after a furlough home, mustered in again on Feb 28, 1864 at New Orleans, LA. The 37th IL Infantry then served duty between TN, MS, LA, and AR. In Jan 1865, the regiment moved to FL, where it later was involved in the Siege of Spanish Fort, the capture of Fort Blakely, and the occupation of Mobile, AL. In June 1865, the unit moved to Galveston, TX, and then on to Houston, where it served on railroad guard duty until Feb 1866. CPL Fryar mustered out of service with his unit on May 15, 1866 at Houston, TX. My gg-granduncle, PVT John Debord, served with CPL Louis Fryar in Co A, 37th IL Infantry.
