PEDRO E. ABAD, 55, of 4601 Mayflower Road, #8K, a retired educator and actor, departed this life on April 13, 2009 in Norfolk Health & Rehabilitation Center. Pedro was born in Norfolk on April 29, 1953 to the late Gladys and Antonio Abad. He graduated from Norview High School in 1971 and received his degree in English education from Saint Paul's College in 1975. He retired from the Norfolk Public Schools in 2004 but continued to work as a long term substitute. In addition, he continued performing in numerous plays for various theatre groups, and was a published poet. He was a dedicated life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He also worked tirelessly with the Tri Cities Chapter, National Alumni Association of Saint Paul's College. He was also a member of the Norview High School Alumni Association. An active member of Grace Episcopal Church, Pedro served on various committees. Several honors and awards have been bestowed on him during his career. He is the recipient of two "Teacher of the Year" titles, a School Bell award, an Apple award, and a Portfolio Best Actor award. He was predeceased in death by his parents Gladys and Antonio. He is survived by his brother, Crispin A. Abad of Alexandria; cousins Nancy Flake-Johnson of Atlanta, Ga. and Thomas Flake of Detroit, MI; nephews Crispin A. Abad, Jr., and John P. Abad, two grand-nieces, one grand-nephew, a host of other cousins and family, close friend Charles Neal, and a host of friends, former colleagues, and students. An Omega Memorial Service given by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will be held on April 18, 2009 from 5 pm to 7 pm at Hale Funeral Home. Family and friends will be at the Omega Service. The Reverend Harold Cobb will conduct funeral services on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 2 pm in Grace Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
