Ida Mourning Smith is the daughter of Mourning Woods Miller (1818-1889) and Robert Cox "Bob" Smith (1815-1865). On 16 Sep 1875, in Franklin County, Tennessee, she married Charles Edgar Blanton, son of Nicie Van Zandt (1821-aft1900) and Dr. Henson G. Blanton (1821-1877). The Blantons lived at Old Salem, about 2 miles from the Smith home at Beans Creek.
Ida and Charles had two children born at Old Salem - Josephine Eunice "Josie" and Jennie Estelle. When time came for their third child to be born, Charles was in Medical School at Vanderbilt in Nashville. The doctor who attended Ida had just come from delivering another baby and did not disinfect his hands. As a result, Ida and the baby contracted erysipelas and died. Ida was twenty-five years old. Both she and the baby were buried in the Smith family cemetery at Beans Creek.
